Massive few weeks for Newcastle United regarding transfers

Technically the transfer window opened on first of July 2012 but we all know clubs could have signed players the moment season 2011-12 ended. Well some deals were concluded even before the season finished. However Newcastle United so far this summer have not brought in who would contest for a first team place, not on a consist basis anyway, not in my opinion.

There has been no shortage of players who have been linked with a switch to St. James’s park; the list has had both the sublime and the ridiculous. Sometimes both in one ;)

Some fans are getting really worried about the situation and are really wondering what is going behind the scenes. With just days left to the start of an important season one can understand the paranoia.

With a great performance last season and qualification for the Europa League has made the magpies have made themselves a very appetizing proposition for many players. Players whose caliber or profile would probably be higher than players previously recruited. So I can understand why deals are taking time especially if the money that we are willing to pay is not the going value.

The goals that the team would have set themselves would surely have been higher than the previous season and a good start would surely help gain the momentum. The club is likely to play close to 60 games than the 43 played last season. If you go by club legend Alan Shearer the squad is not strong enough to handle the quantity of games and I agree (not that I would ever disagree with big Al).

There lies a gaping need for Newcastle to reinforce the squad to accomplish goals set or risk underachieving and compromising club’s future and present. The weeks leading up to August 31st 2012 therefore represent some of the critical weeks for the club. Hopefully Mike Ashley can loosen the purse strings and we can bring in our first choice targets. If we don’t then it may become a long – long season.
