Rohit Sharma – Man of the Series against Sri Lanka

Sharma - on one of his good days

Yes, it is sarcasm that I imply here, but you could not fault me as realistically one has to ask this question. Although in a context totally different.

So, here is the context (yes the different one), in the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, which India won 4-1 by the way, Rohit Sharma, managed to get a gross total of 13 runs, with scores of 5, 0, 0, 4, and 4. Despite the poor form he showed in Australia at the beginning of the year the team management stuck by him for the series and this is what they got.

Now this is plain and simply wrong, how could one allow such performance and not take any action. This not only sends wrong signals to players who are coming through but also smacks signs of cliques in the Indian Cricket team. As an avid follower of the game I ask myself what the hell is happening. Is there no accountability responsibility etc. what would a player like Ajinkya Rahane be thinking who did so well against England both home and away. This is just one player that I am citing there may be many others who may feel betrayed.

Granted he did well in IPL, but that is not a standard that one should set when it comes to National selection, even if it is I can see many others who can have a better claim than Rohit Sharma. Subramaniam Badrinath and Mandeep Singh are two names that come to mind instantly.

Returning to the topic, Rohit did bowl 16 overs in the series giving away 74 runs with an economy rate of 4.6 and picking up one wicket. May be that was the reason he was persisted with. Given the fact he could keep his place in the team even such below par performances makes me think if he should have been the man of the Series not Virat Kohli.

I am not trying to kick a man when he is down, but just asking a plain and simple question. Like everybody I think he has got talent but others are not untalented either and no matter who you are you must not get away with things like those. In addition how players like Yousuf Pathan and Ravinder Jadeja have been treated should not be forgotten. With a below average team like Sri Lanka one could get away but I really doubt one will be able to do so against top teams like South Africa and Australia. Here is one for hoping as an Indian cricket fan.

Let us know what you think. Whether Rohit is to blame or the management for continuously ignoring others and sticking with him.

  1. The sarcasm is spot on. There is no doubt about the high-handedness of MSD when it comes to team selection. Otherwise how on earth one can understand his persistence with Ravinder Jadeja for two years with such pathetic below par performances. This is out in the open, if your an MSD sycophant, you get rewarded with a place in the side. i pity for the likes of Rahane and Tiwari..
