In the field of research and writing plagiarism is an issue that requires a lot of attention. with the coming up of internet in a big way the problem has only escalated, as the search engines only make it easier for the offender to take advantage of literature available on the net. Coming to think of it, it indeed is a serious issue because you are putting something as your own creation when it's clearly not. In addition, you do not know the full context of the written thing of the work, in copying the work one is making a very dangerous move.
When you present a solution to a problem set in front of you by a client, he expects you to provide an authentic, first hand solution. One just cannot dish up work that has already been done. Plagiarism is wrong both on a personal level and a professional level. Plagiarism is illegal too, after all you are infringing with something that are intellectual rights of someone else. you are not only putting yourself at risk of being sued if caught you also run the risk of sullying the reputation of your organisation too, not to mention loosing the client remains a very realistic possibility. Thereby putting your colleagues in a perilous position. on a personal level it makes a person lazy and hampers development at an intellectual level. Plagiarism can also act like a bad apple where one person starts it and the bad habit spreads to other employees too. In terms of repercussions plagiarism has the potential to be a real disaster for an organisation.
I don't know if plagiarism can be totally eliminated but it must be curbed to as little as possible. First you need to have 100% claim to the fact that the work rendered is plagiarized, because if you don't then in my opinion there is no case to answer. There are tools and softwares available that allow you to check whether a piece of work is original or not. However that is time bound depending on the length and kind of work that has been submitted. Plagiarism is not an offense neither civil nor criminal, so people feel they may get away even if they get caught and no liability would accrue. If there were stricter laws that dealt with the problem then may be we would have seen a lot less of this problem. The best solution that I can see which will substantially reduce plagiarism is to inculcate the process of being original and focus on being as authenticate as possible. The responsibility of being original should come from within and should not be something that is forced. a palpable punishment may be financial or otherwise could also serve the purpose.
No Matter what you say plagiarism is a serious problem is today's society. It is a bigger problem in the field of research and related business. In fact it has corrupted the modern day society and surely plagiarism should be curbed to as little as possible.
