Should Organ Donation be Incentive Linked or be Made Mandatory through Law

The tragic dead of Maharashtra Congress President and ex-Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr. Vilas Rao Deshmukh has sparked several questions in the minds of people and government, that a country of 1.2 billion plus nation failed dramatically to arrange a liver and a kidney for such a powerful and influential person.

Think of thousands of ordinary citizens who are dying every day owing to unavailability of vital organs. These questions make us to realize and retro inspect that money, power and solid networking cannot buy everything. His death due to non-availability of liver and kidney brings to the fore that Indians are bad organ donors, perhaps in the world. It is easy to understand the trauma and pain the near and dear ones of the deceased ones goes through but it is equally important to understand the magnitude of contribution such people can make in the lives of millions who have been suffering every day in the absence of such vital organs which could otherwise be put to use and can light up the lives of several and give them fresh lease of life. I strongly feel that all Indians must pledge to donate their vital organs to bring happiness in the lives of many deprived ones.

Government should organize aggressive country wide campaigns with the help of NGOs, education institutions and others. Well as seen in the past, in India nothing works voluntarily, hence government can think of making this an incentive linked scheme for the families which are coming forth for organ donation. The other alternative could be to make it mandatory for citizens, this perhaps could be harsh but keeping in mind the interest of millions of sufferers and their possible contribution in the nation building and prosperity, this sacrifice should be acceptable to and must be accepted by folks. Perhaps one may think how illogical, insensitive and what not, I am in my reasoning but trust me it can work wonders and motivate many more people to come forward. Further one must remember, every unconventional step provokes criticism in the beginning but these criticisms are always short lived and die a natural death.
